One thing that has always appealed to me about Debian is the strength of the community behind it. A somewhat recent incident has reminded me of how strong this community really is. When several members of the Debian community became concerned about a situation in the life of another member, they immediately tried to contact that member, and that member’s friends and family to insure that person would be ok. Phone calls were made halfway across the world in the middle of the night (in various timezones) to insure the well-being of a member of our community. It is a strong reminder that even though the Debian community may have vigorous arguements about technical and social issues, we still take care of our own.

Indeed. It’s one of the most amazing things inside Debian.
People will fight a lot on mailing lists about technnical matters but will always be so kind and lovely when some non-virtual issue come up with fellow developers.

Hi Astronaut,
this way.
In the world that we now live in, communication is varied and human memory is still stored in the same way: as a collection of various associated blob types to people. These blob types are: f2f meetings, blog posts, irc chats, reading code segments, reading code comments, reading README and changelogs, SMS chats, phone chats and more. All these aggregate in ones brain in the same way wheather they refer to a person you know in real life or some you have been chatting with for 4 years only on IRC. There is a weight given to each based on various priorities but when someone wheather here next to you or someone in a virtual realm like the Debian community says ‘I need help’ via blog post, irc, telephone, or what ever, it still elicits the same empathetic response in people. This is a good thing ™. If Helen Keller, who was blind and deaf, existed today, she could communicate just as effectively as you or me in the virtual world and could ask for help from thousands of people instead of a few that lived in her house.
cheers,
Kev
ps. the script for this page is not very forgiving if you forget to enter the CAPTCHA as it will not remember your post but only inform you that you did not enter the answer. It should keep your post and allow you to simply re-enter the CAPTCHA a second time. I lost my first post
